Our Rescues
Another rescue of 100 girls done and dusted. 1100 to go from this next shed by the end of next month so I need the word out there.
These girls are lovely hens. They are ex caged girls, but before I re-home them they all get treated for mites, lice, worms and clip their nails to be able to scratch and I reshape their beaks be able to eat normally.
I taught the hens how to eat, drink, scratch and find shelter like normal chickens do and I’ve given them a better life to the most of my ability. They still look a bit rough around the edges and with still have Feathers that need to grow back, but these girls are far from their “end of lay” like the battery farms would have you informed otherwise. Once they have their feathers back (only a few weeks of good high protein feeding and room to move) they will continue to lay for years to go on and they will supply you wonderful, divine fresh eggs for you to enjoy.
I have been doing this now for just over 2 years. In this time I have helped rehabilitate and re-home well over 10,000 battery hens. I have kept a few special needs girls here with me to train the other girls to do what they need to do to survive outside of the cage. These girls are my regular layers. Some even twice a day in the longer months.
I would like to mention that over 70% of eggs that come out of the New Zealand market place are still those of caged birds. Not just the eggs that are for sale but the eggs in your cakes, pies, mayonnaises and the list goes on. Every time you buy 1 of these items you are helping keep these girls locked up.
We welcome you all to come and see what we do here at free as a bird rescue. Help us to educate those out there that don’t know the harms of what really happens to a hen at these battery hen farms
All of our girls are available for adoption for $15 each hen. Donations are always very welcomed and appreciated also, as everything we make goes back to Free as a Bird Rescue.
